Durante il Medioevo nell’area delle terme furono costruite alcune chiese e numerose case private, tra le quali possiamo ricordare quella di Pomponio Leto, fondatore dell’Accademia Romana e di Bartolomeo Platina, bibliotecario della Vaticana e storico dei papi. All’inizio del XVII secolo la parte meridionale del complesso era ancora in piedi e fu definitivamente demolita in occasione della costruzione del palazzo Rospigliosi. Nel corso degli scavi per le nuove costruzioni furono recuperate numerose statue che ornavano i ricchi ambienti delle terme, tra le quali possiamo ricordare i due Dioscuri della fontana sulla piazza del Quirinale; le statue di Costantino e di Costanzo ora sulla balaustra del Campidoglio; il Costantino di S. Giovanni in Laterano; le statue dei Fiumi del Palazzo Senatorio; il Torso del Belvedere e forse la statua bronzea del Pugilatore in riposo del Museo Nazionale Romano. Oltre a questa nutrita serie di sculture che formavano l’arredo del grande complesso, sono da ricordare anche i preziosi affreschi, in parte recuperati, che decoravano le case interrate al momento della costruzione delle terme.
