In piazza di Pietra, inglobate sul fianco settentrionale del Palazzo della Borsa, sono ben visibili undici colonne scanalate corinzie in marmo bianco azzurrino proconnesio (marmo proveniente dall’isola di Marmara, nel Mare omonimo).Esse appartengono al tempio del Divo Adriano, fatto costruire nell’area centrale del Campo Marzio dall’imperatore Antonino Pio, suo successore, e dedicato nell’anno 145 d.C.L’edificio di culto periptero, con otto colonne sui lati brevi e tredici su quelli lunghi, di cui si conservano le undici del fianco destro, presentava la facciata rivolta a est, verso la via Lata (odierna via del Corso), con ampia gradinata di accesso.La peristasi era impostata su un alto podio (circa m 4), in opera quadrata di peperino, rivestito in origine di marmo; l’architrave ed il fregio conservati sono in parte antichi, pur avendo subito diversi rimaneggiamenti.La cella era sempre in opera quadrata di peperino, con rivestimento marmoreo: all’interno i muri si articolavano in semicolonne gravitanti su zoccoli, sui quali erano raffigurate, ad altorilievo, le personificazioni delle province romane, alternate a trofei a bassorilievo, posti in corrispondenza degli intercolumni. Una parte significativa di tali rilievi, che sotto il profilo ideologico sottolineano il carattere fondamentalmente pacifico della politica estera di Adriano, realizzati in uno stile freddo e di maniera, si trova oggi divisa tra il Museo Nazionale di Napoli e il Palazzo dei Conservatori.La copertura della cella, come si può ancora vedere da un tratto superstite dentro il Palazzo della Borsa, era costituita da una volta a botte cassettonata.Il tempio, secondo una ricostruzione ottocentesca (Canina e poi Lanciani) non accettata negli studi più recenti (Cipollone), si trovava al centro di una grande piazza porticata (m 100 x 90), con colonne in marmo giallo antico, aperta sul lato orientale in un arco trionfale, di cui restano tracce della struttura nelle cantine al n. civico 333 di via del Corso, e due rilievi del rivestimento: uno con scena di «adventus» (ingresso) di Adriano in Roma (oggi al Museo dei Conservatori) e l’altro con la raffigurazione di una scena di «supplicatio» di una delegazione di barbari presso l’imperatore, conservato a Palazzo Torlonia.F.
