L’antica chiesa diaconale di S. Maria in via Lata è stata costruita su un imponente complesso edilizio, databile al I secolo d.C., che si sviluppava sul lato sinistro del primo tratto della via Flaminia, i cui resti sono attualmente visibili nei sotterranei della chiesa stessa e dei palazzi vicini. Si tratta di una lunga e possente costruzione la cui struttura portante è costituita da quattro file di pilastri in opera quadrata di travertino a blocchi bugnati che sostengono una serie di volte a crociera. Il lungo porticato, che si estendeva dal vicolo Doria alla via Lata moderna per uno sviluppo complessivo di cento metri, era diviso all’interno in tre navate, con quella centrale che aveva una larghezza doppia rispetto a quelle laterali. Sia i caratteri costruttivi dell’edificio che il suo sviluppo lungo il margine occidentale della via Lata, fanno pensare a una lunga porticus, che doveva conferire un aspetto monumentale a questo primo tratto della strada.All’inizio del III secolo d.C., certamente in seguito a un cambiamento d’uso dell’edificio, parte della navata centrale venne divisa con muri in laterizio in modo da ricavare una serie di ambienti coperti con volte a botte impostate a un livello inferiore (circa m 5,50) rispetto a quelle della fase precedente. La presenza di alcune mensole di pietra inserite nei muri divisori, a circa m 3 dal pavimento, fa supporre l’esistenza di soppalchi lignei in funzione di mezzanini, che dovevano dividere in altezza lo spazio dei nuovi locali. Quest’ultimo elemento, unito alla conformazione generale dei nuovi vani, fa pensare a horrea, cioè a magazzini per il deposito di merci, allestiti all’interno del monumentale edificio, evidentemente in seguito alle nuove necessità del quartiere. Probabilmente nel VII secolo, vennero demoliti alcuni muri divisori del magazzino ottenendo così un ambiente unico al quale venne unita un’abside sul lato orientale, che rappresenterà la cappella centrale della diaconia. Le pareti del nuovo edificio di culto saranno decorate con affreschi recanti scene desunte dalle storie di Salomone, dei Sette Dormienti di Efeso e da altre vite di santi. F.A.
