La grande piazza dei Saepta, destinata ai comizi elettorali, ideata secondo il progetto di Cesare come grande spazio circondato da portici, venne portata a termine da Agrippa nel 27 a.C. Egli la chiamò Iulia, in onore di Augusto, e la fece decorare con marmi e pitture. Due anni dopo (nel 25 a.C.) la decorazione fu completata con l’aggiunta di una STOA TOY POSEIDVNOS (secondo come narra Cassio Dione), per commemorare le sue vittorie navali del 31 a.C.: si trattava della Porticus Argonautarum che derivava il nome dalle pitture che la decoravano raffiguranti la mitica spedizione di Giasone e dei suoi compagni. Da altre fonti il portico è conosciuto anche con il nome di porticus Agrippae o Agrippiana.È ormai accertata l’esatta localizzazione dei Saepta, in base al riconoscimento di un frammento della Forma Urbis severiana, che ha permesso di collocare la piazza a est del Pantheon e delle Terme di Agrippa; pertanto si è ipotizzato che i portici che la circondavano, la Porticus Meleagri e la Porticus Argonautarum, fossero disposti lungo i lati lunghi della piazza, rispettivamente il primo, sul lato orientale (in corrispondenza di via del Gesù e via dei Cestari) e l’altro, sul lato occidentale (attuale via della Minerva). Tutto il complesso fu poi danneggiato dall’incendio avvenuto sotto l’impero di Tito nell’80 d.C. e ricostruito da Adriano contemporaneamente agli altri edifici limitrofi.Lungo il lato orientale del Pantheon si conserva un muro in laterizio, scandito da nicchie rettangolari, datato sulla base dei bolli laterizi all’epoca adrianea: esso è stato attribuito al muro di fondo della Porticus Argonautarum, che su questo lato si addossava direttamente al tempio. Recentemente si è ipotizzato che la STOA TOY POSEIDVNOS citata da Cassio Dione sarebbe un settore della Porticus Argonautarum che conteneva un’ara o una statua di Nettuno e pertanto con funzione religiosa.
