L’edificio fatto erigere da Domiziano a sud dello Stadio per le audizioni musicali, secondo i Cataloghi Regionari, conteneva 10.600 posti. Esso era costituito da una struttura semicircolare, che attualmente ancora sopravvive nell’isolato che comprende il Palazzo dei Massimo su Corso Vittorio Emanuele. Nel 1681 al di sotto del complesso della chiesa di S. Pantaleo furono scoperti resti di una platea di fondazione e una fila di blocchi di travertino; nel 1747 si rinvennero frammenti architettonici e nel corso dell’Ottocento una grande platea di calcestruzzo tra Corso Rinascimento e Corso Vittorio Emanuele. Nel 1936-37 altri avanzi tornarono alla luce presso via della Posta Vecchia. La colonna (diametro: m 0,93), rinvenuta in quell’occasione, è stata rialzata in piazza dei Massimi (ricomposta da quattro frammenti per un’altezza di m 8,60). L’Odeon era costruito su una sostruzione di muri radiali e aveva una cavea di circa 100 m di diametro. La struttura architettonica era simile a quella di un teatro con la differenza che l’Odeon doveva essere coperto per ottenere così una migliore acustica. La fronte rettilinea, rivolta verso nord, era probabilmente costituita da avancorpi ornati da almeno due ordini di colonne di cipollino con capitelli corinzi. L’edificio, completato o restaurato per opera di Apollodoro di Damasco in età traianea, rimase in uso probabilmente fino al V sec. d.C. Oggi risulta parzialmente inglobato nel Palazzo Massimo eretto da Baldassarre Peruzzi (1532-36) sul luogo dove erano le case di proprietà dei Massimo, distrutte durante il sacco di Roma nel 1527. P.
