La denominazione di Domus Transitoria («casa di passaggio»), attribuita alla prima residenza urbana di Nerone, rispecchia in maniera appropriata il carattere estensivo che la connotava, in quanto essa collegava le costruzioni imperiali del Palatino agli horti Mecenatis sull’Esquilino, due settori presumibilmente separati da edifici sia pubblici che privati. Successivamente all’incendio del 64 d.C. il complesso venne ricostruito dall’imperatore in forma ancor più grandiosa e monumentale, prendendo il nome di Domus Aurea. Resti murari con ogni probabilità pertinenti alla Domus Transitoria risultano localizzati, allo stato attuale delle ricerche, al di sotto della Domus Flavia (dove è anche testimoniata la fase edilizia neroniana post-incendio), in particolare in corrispondenza della sala del triclinio (cd. Coenatio Iovis) e della c.d. Aula Regia. Qualora peraltro si potesse attribuire con certezza all’inizio del regno di Nerone il primo impianto del basamento della Domus Tiberiana – come pure sembra possibile – anche questa verrebbe a far parte del medesimo organismo costruttivo della Domus Transitoria.Le strutture scoperte al di sotto del triclinio del palazzo flavio, i cd. Bagni di Livia, sono un notevole esempio di sistemazione architettonica ipogea con funzione di ninfeo. Si tratta di una costruzione di pianta rettangolare inserita, forse per la mancanza di adeguato spazio al piano terra, all’interno di un enorme cavo praticato nel terreno del colle (m 31 x 11.50 x 6.70) e poggiante sul banco di tufo naturale, parzialmente rinforzata da un tratto di fondazione cementizia. Le cortine murarie delle pareti degli ambienti interni sono in opera laterizia, rivestite da uno strato di tegole appositamente predisposte a creare un’intercapedine posta in comunicazione con un vespaio sottostante il pavimento, destinato alla raccolta dell’acqua che alimentava scenograficamente il ninfeo. Due scale convergenti a gradini di marmo bianco, poste a ridosso delle estremità del lato nord dell’edificio, danno accesso a un grande ambiente centrale scoperto sul cui fondo è sistemato un ninfeo.Questo appare costituito da una parete curva sul cui asse, compresa tra due nicchie semicircolari, è una cascata a scalini lungo la quale scorreva l’acqua che andava ad alimentare nove zampilli antistanti un pulpitum a colonnine di porfido e serpentino, con basi e capitelli in bronzo dorato, situato alla base della parete stessa (proprio la presenza degli zampilli, erroneamente interpretati come bidet dagli scavatori che nel Settecento rinvennero il complesso, è all’origine della definizione «Bagni di Livia» con la quale esso è noto). Di fronte al ninfeo, sul lato opposto dell’ambiente, è un padiglione quadrangolare elevato su basso podio, di probabile uso tricliniare, originariamente coperto da un tetto sostenuto da dodici colonne e dotato di una vasca con zampillo centrale (anch’essa alimentata dalla cascata del ninfeo antistante). Sui restanti lati est e ovest del grande ambiente centrale, altri se ne aprono, tre per parte, di cui i due meridionali più ampi, dotati di ingresso distilo e con cascata a gradini sulle pareti di fondo (anche questi pertanto dei ninfei), quelli settentrionali, coperti come i precedenti da volte a botte, di minori dimensioni. Tutto il complesso era originariamente rivestito, sia sulle pareti sia sui pavimenti, da lastre e intarsi figurati di prezioso marmo di diverso colore, mentre l’intradosso delle volte era impreziosito da stucchi, affreschi istoriati con scene mitologiche, dorature e castoni di gemme (buona parte dell’apparato decorativo del ninfeo si trova oggi al Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli).
