Complesso sotto S.Carlo ai Catinari

Sotto il convento annesso alla chiesa di S. Carlo ai Catinari e parte dell’isolato adiacente, alla profondità di circa m 6 dal livello stradale moderno, si estende un ampio complesso archeologico di circa 400 metri quadrati di superficie. La parte attualmente scavata è rappresentata da un insieme di nove ampi vani che dovevano costituire in origine le cantine di un grande edificio superiore, ma che già in epoca antica avevano in parte mutato funzione. I muri dell’intera struttura sono in opera laterizia di ottima fattura databile tra la fine del I e l’inizio del II secolo d.C. Le stanze sono coperte con volte a botte e a crociera e avevano in origine dei pavimenti in «opera spicata». In un periodo successivo a quello della costruzione (probabilmente all’inizio del III secolo), l’ala occidentale dell’edificio fu separata dal resto del complesso per essere adibita a nuovi usi. La parte più importante di questo settore ristrutturato è costituita da una grande aula, ricavata dall’unione di due ambienti diversi, che presenta su parte della volta e su una parete un interessante mosaico policromo a motivi vegetali. Sul lato opposto della grande aula vi sono due vasche di forma allungata con l’interno foderato di marmo, mentre il soffitto di questo settore è rivestito di pomici a imitazione dell’interno di una grotta. Resti di un mosaico pavimentale di tipo geometrico, visibili in un angolo dell’ambiente, contribuiscono a completare il quadro di una grande sala, riccamente decorata, adibita probabilmente a ninfeo delle abitazioni superiori o ad aula di riunione di un qualche sodalizio.
